Scouts BSA Merit Badges

Merit Badge Day: May 8, 2021

We will be offering Scouts BSA merit badges on Saturday, May 8, 2021.  To register, click the link for the session below.  Click the button called "Start Non-Member Application-Age 18 or over."  Please ignore "age 18 or over."  Fill in the contact data that is relevant.  You can skip member type, grade/title, and religious preference even though they say required.

Email Liz Botkin if you want to be on the last minute wait list.  I expect with COVID we will have several last minute cancellations.  If you plan to be available, email me your cell and I'll text you if a spot opens.

Aviation, $20
  • Session 1: 8:00am-noon (full) OR

  • Session 2: 1:00pm-5:00pm (full)

  • Optional Activities for both groups: noon-1:00pm

Search and Rescue, $30
  • Session 3: 8:00am-3:00pm (full) (MBC's will be available until 5:00pm if any Scouts need additional time)

Group Sizes:

  • Each session is limited to 20 Scouts BSA.  Scout leaders and adults will be able to rotate through to observe the merit badge class while keeping overall group size to 25.

Scout Leadership:

We will have a registered female BSA leader on-site.  We will need one additional registered BSA leader on-site for each session.  Please email Liz Botkin if you can assist.

  • You will need to enter the airport through a locked gate.  Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your session so we can let everyone in the gate.

  • There are multiple gates at Crystal Airport.  This link takes you directly to our building using Google maps: 5800 Crystal Airport Rd, Crystal, MN 55429.

  • We will have some additional activities from noon-1:00pm.  All sessions are welcome to attend.  Please bring your own lunch/drink and plan to eat outside.  We recommend bringing a lawn chair as well.  We will have a covered area open if the weather does not permit eating outside.

  • We've designed these classes to teach them from beginning to end!

Earning the Badge:

  • As the class is taught, Scouts will complete the merit badge workbook.  At the end of class, Scouts will turn in the worksheet for official review and credit.  Please email Liz Botkin if your Scout might have challenges in filling out the merit badge worksheet so we are prepared.  Some merit badges may have follow-up work but we are attempting to minimize this.  We will update Scoutbook within 24 hours to show the merit badge is approved by the Merit Badge Counselor.  If your Troop does not use Scoutbook, please bring a blue card.

  • Who is my merit badge counselor?  Each class will be taught by multiple Civil Air Patrol experts, both adult and youth members.  For simplicity, we will have a single merit badge counselor.  Your Scoutmaster can add me to your merit badge (search for Elizabeth Botkin).  Or you can send Liz Botkin your Scout's name (exactly as it appears in Scoutbook) and BSA #,  and then I can link to them.

What to Wear/Bring:

  • Medical Form A/B: Required only for Scouts.  These can be retained by your Troop leader or parent that is staying for the day or given to us in an envelope with the Scouts name.  You will receive these back at the end of the day.

  • Health Screening Checklist: Must be provided for anyone on-site.

  • Merit Badge Worksheet(s) with your Scouts Name and BSA # written on top.  Scouts will fill out the workbooks during class.

  • Pencil

  • Face mask (no shields please)

  • Lunch and water bottle

  • Field Uniform (aka: Class A Uniform)

  • Rain gear depending on the weather (we will spend a portion of the day outside).

  • Lawn chair (optional for parents, there is a lawn area plus an open hanger that parents can sit in to keep out of the weather if we have rain)
