Cadet Wings Program

Goal:

This program provides merit-based funding for flight training to cadets who are working to earn their Private Pilot Certificate (PPC). Furthermore, this program, among others, aids the U.S. Air Force in reducing the current pilot shortage.

Method:

Cadets interested in the program follow the application steps, including providing a letter of recommendation and flight training plan. Those accepted into the program receive funding from the Ray Foundation for any training they complete towards their PPC.

Application Path:

1. Cadets apply through CadetInvest on eServices from July 1 - Sept. 30 noon central time, entering information on their experience in CAP, academic ability, previous flight training, and a letter of recommendation.
2. The Squadron Commander and Wing Commander approve the application.
3. Application is reviewed and scored by the Youth Aviation Initiative (YAI) panel.
4. Cadet is notified of their position as either a prospective candidate or waitlist.
5. Candidate uploads pre-requisite documents, such as logbook records, medical certificate, student pilot certificate, and a detailed flight plan.
6. The YAI panel reviews and verifies documents and decides whether or not the candidate is enrolled in the program.
7. Candidate is enrolled and can go fly with funding from the Cadet Wings program.

Requirements:

To be eligible, a cadet must complete at least one solo flight and pass the FAA written knowledge test. Cadets age 16+ are encouraged to apply during the application window even if you do not meet these requirements. Once you apply, you will be allowed to update your qualifications even after the window is closed. Note: You must solo in a powered aircraft if you are requesting funding for powered flight training.

Note: If you apply without all the requirements, you do not need to upload the Supplemental documents on the application in CadetInvest. Wait to do that once you meet all the requirements as your application will not be considered until then.

Restrictions:

Once enrolled, candidates have 6 months to complete their training, and cannot exceed 60 total flight hours. An exception to these limits may be requested. Additionally, funding will only be provided for flight training done or their PPC.

Conclusion:

The Wings program is excellent for cadets who aspire to become pilots. It is designed to move cadets through flight training from solo to PPC efficiently and reliably, and it does its job well. This uptick in cadets who attain their PPC will ultimately provide higher recruiting for the U.S. Air Force as they navigate through the current pilot shortage.

Application Process:

Please refer to the Cadet Wings - Student Guide for full details and the most up to date information!

Prerequisites: Below are the prerequisites for an ideal candidate.  However, if you are in the process of completing these, you can still apply to the program and include a Flight Plan that indicates what you are missing and gives details on when you plan to complete the missing items.

  • Currency Aircraft Ground Handling (completed in Axis within the past 2 years)

  • Current Student Pilot Certificate

  • Current FAA Medical Certificate (class III as a minimum, if applicable)

  • Solo Endorsement

  • FAA Airman Knowledge Test Report (containing passing score)

  • Exhibiting the potential for continued CAP service as a cadet leader

Cadet Tracking Tool:

  • You can download this Cadet Tracker to record your goals and progress of the requirements and the application scoring.  As of January, 2021 we are hearing that it's more important to focus on the prerequisites and the scoring is secondary for selection.
